The name “Darjeeling comes from the Tibetan word ‘Dorje’ & ‘ling’ where ‘dorje’ means a precious stone or the thunderbolt and ‘ling’ meaning place, hence Darjeeling means ‘the land of the thunderbolt’. The average altitude of Darjeeling is 6,700 feet (2,043 meters), the highest point or the peak of the whole Darjeeling district is Sandakphu which is around 12,000 feet (3658 meters) which also the highest altitude point in the whole of West Bengal state.

December – February: is the winter time in Darjeeling, this is also a good time to visit Darjeeling to witness the beauty of this hill station during winters and have the amazing views of snow clad mountain peaks.
The average annual maximum temperature is 14.8° Celsius, and the average annual minimum temperature is 8.8° Celsius In the Summer (May-June) months also the maximum temperature will never cross above 25°, and in winter months (Dec-Feb) the average temperature is around 5° to 8° and snowfall in Darjeeling is rare nowadays.
Darjeeling By Air : Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri is the nearest Airport to reach Darjeeling by flight, Bagdogra airport is well connected from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and other main Indian cities there are many direct and connecting flights available from these cities.Bagdogra to Darjeeling is around 90kms only and tourists can easily get cabs outside the airport and reach Darjeeling in 3-4hrs.
Darjeeling By Train : New Jalpaiguri is the nearest Railway Station and few trains goes to Siliguri Station which is more near to Darjeeling, these stations are very well connected to the all main railway’s routes of India. You can also take Toy Train ride from NJP or Siliguri, Toy which takes around 7hrs to reach Darjeeling but these 7hrs will worth as the route will take you through the lovely & scenic views of this beautiful hill station.
Darjeeling By Road : Darjeeling is well connected to major cities of West bengal & Kolkatta. There are ample of buses available from Kolkata as well as Siliguri to Darjeeling, so if you are traveling via Kolkata, you can take an overnight bus to Darjeeling and if you are travelling via Siliguri or NJP you can take the normal or Volvo buses to reach Darjeeling. Also, you can hire Private or Sharing basis Cabs from Siliguri or NJP station.
