Khecheopalri the Magical Lake of Pelling, Sikkim

Khecheopalri Lake also known as “Kha-Chot-Palri“. This is one of the sacred lakes of Buddhist and Hindus is situated in West Part of Sikkim state, near the Khecheopalri village of Pelling Distt. The altitude of this lake is 5600 feet from the sea level, the lake is 148kms from Gangtok city (Capital of Sikkim state). The meaning of the word Khecheopalri is “Paradies of Padmasambhava” who was the 8th century Buddhist Guru, this Lake is one of the religious pilgrimage places for Buddhist. As per Hindu belief, Lord Shiva came here for cogitation.

You can see some magical things in this lake, there are many trees and other plants around it but you will never see a single Leaf in this holy lake, the belief is the birds are living and flying around the lake are picking up all the dirt of this lake and that is the reason the water of this lake is crystal clear. It’s mandatory for all the visitors to take off their shoes before going close to this lake.

Entry Ticket & other costs for Khecheopalri Lake visit:

Entry Fee: Entry Ticket for the lake is 20rs Per Person.

Cab Cost: If you are in Pelling town than a private cab will cost you 1500-2000rs & Shared cab will be 400-500rs per person.

Sikkim Roadways Buses are also available to reach here at a very nominal cost, bus will providing the services only one time in a day.

 

Temperature:

The average temperature in this area will be between 05 – 25 °C. In extreme winters temperature can go down to -05 °C and in Summers it can go up to 25 °C also. The idol temperature will be in the February – March – April months.

 

How to Reach Khecheopalri Lake:

Khecheopalri lake is near to Pelling distt. of Sikkim state and easily reachable by Road, Train and Flight. Siliguri is the nearest Airport and Railway station which is 132kms from Pelling and this lake is 34kms from Pelling, it’s suggestable to have 1 night halt at Pelling to visit this magical lake so that you will be able to visit other attractions in & nearby Pelling apart of this lake.

 

Best time:

Pelling is open for the tourists throughout the year but as the road conditions are not that good in this area so we suggest avoiding the monsoon time (July-Sep). Apart from Monsoon, you can visit any time here but February & March months are the best time as in these months this lake looks more beautiful.

 

Things to Do in Khecheopalri Lake:

Wish: You can pray and make your wish in front of this lake, locals believe that if you make a truehearted wish that will be fulfilled for sure.

Fish Feeding: there are many colourful fishes in this holy lake, you can buy food and feed these fishes. For  Peoples, it’s a saintly work by feeding the fishes, by feeding you will feel peace and happiness.

Shopping: Near the lake, you will find a few small shops run by the locals who sell handmade items, so you can buy and take some lifetime memories with you.

Climbing: There is a small mountain peak which is very near to the lake. It’s not like the amount Everest as it’s a small peak which anyone can climb in 15-20mins and experience the stunning view from the peak. So we all can fulfil our dream of climbing the peak of a mountain :D.

Khecheopalri Village:

Khecheopalri Village is just 16kms from the Lake and tourists can enjoy some local food here, this village is very small and very low populated but the surrounding of the village very serene.

Kanchenjunga Falls:

This one of the tallest waterfalls of Sikkim is around 17kms from the lake and one of the main tourist attractions of the West Sikkim. Surrounded by the lush green hills and forests. As per local peoples, this waterfall is linked with Mount Kanchenjunga and the main source of its water is the glacier of mount Kanchenjunga only.

Sanghak Choeling Monastery:

26kms from the lake this is one of the oldest Monasteries of Noth East India, Monastery is very unique and colourful, also you can have a very scenic view from the monastery.
