1: Visa Requirements: Foreigners need a valid Indian visa to enter Darjeeling (West Bengal) and Sikkim. There are different types of visas available depending on the purpose of your visit. However, you can apply for an Indian visa online through the Indian government’s official website. It is advisable to apply for a visa well in advance to avoid any last-minute complications.
2: Restricted Areas Permits in Sikkim (RAP) / Inner Line Permit: All Foreigners (excluding citizens of Bhutan) who want to come and stay in the Sikkim state should fill up the form and apply for Restricted Areas Permits (RAP) also known as Inner Line Permit with their Passport and Visa copies and their photographs at the authorised officeses and after getting the Permit they can enter the state
3: Travel Documents: Foreigners are required to carry their passports with valid visas to enter Darjeeling and Sikkim. It is also advisable to carry a printed copy of your visa approval letter and other travel documents. The Indian government requires all foreign visitors to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days of arrival. Your hotel or guesthouse may help you with the registration process.
4: Protected Area Permit (PAP): If a foreigner wants to visit Tsomgo Lake in East Sikkim, Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Thangu Valley in North Sikkim, then they will need a PAP (Protected Area Permit). And their visit to these areas should be under the supervision of a registered guide of Sikkim.
5: Health and Safety: Sikkim and Darjeeling are relatively safe destinations for tourists. However, it is advisable to take certain precautions to ensure your safety. Avoid travelling alone at night and do not carry large amounts of cash or valuable items with you. If you are travelling alone, inform your hotel or guesthouse about your whereabouts.
6: Currency Exchange: The currency used in Sikkim and Darjeeling is the Indian rupee (₹) INR. Foreigners can exchange their currency at the airport, banks, or authorized money changers. It is advisable to carry cash as many places may not accept credit cards or other forms of payment. Moreover, ATMs are available in Gangtok and Darjeeling, but they may not be available in other parts of these destinations.
7: Language: The official languages of Sikkim are English, Nepali, Sikkimese (Bhutia) and Lepcha. And in the Darjeeling District, Nepali, Hindi, English, and Bengali are the most common languages used by the locals.
8: Transportation: Sikkim and Darjeeling have limited transportation options. Taxis, Cabs, and buses are available for transportation on the destinations. However, it is advised to book your tour package with cab transportation in advance, especially during the season. All the local travel companies make the complete tour packages with stay, transportation, and sightseeing.
